I worked on a startup for a year. Here is what I learned.

Bootstrapping a startup takes a lot of work and patience. Let me tell you the story of a developer that hated marketing (me)

Marketing

Problem: I hate marketing. Couldn't bring myself to do it and wanted to build my product instead.
Solution:
What worked for me was to set MRR(Monthly recurring revenue) goals to balance development and marketing. For example: I don't allow myself to touch the backend code until I have done enough marketing to reach $150 MRR. After reaching that MRR goal, I add a few more features and focus on marketing again.

I think a good takeaway from this year is that managing your time, especially time between building and marketing, is really really important. Generally, In the beginning stages of your project, at least 80% of your time should be spent on marketing and building a community around your product.

When it is time to add new features, I really recommend using a public feedback board (with feature voting) to capture all the user feedback, feature requests and bug reports. It keeps all your product feedback in one place so you can easily make sense of it and make the correct product decisiouns when building your project. The tool that I am building is called Featurebase and it does all of that for free, check it out if you are interested: https://featurebase.app/

Building without marketing reminds me of a quote I once heard.

When a tree falls in the woods and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?

No matter how incredible a product is, if no one knows about it, it's completely useless.

On a sidenote, you've got a super beautiful site!

      Love that analogy.
The website is made by my co-founder, Bruno. I'll pass the compliment along.

Where are you currently in terms of MRR?

    1. 1

      Current MRR is €69.46
Many people have chosen to buy the lifetime instead of opting for a subscription so our non-recurring cash flow is €828 from the beginning of the year.

Love the idea of a homebase for various types of info/data. (That partially inspired me for the product I'm building now, ie, a central bookshelf for the free online resources you'd otherwise download and lose.) Has your rule on prioritizing building vs marketing been working well for you? In terms of achieving both of those things effectively and being able to stick to it?
