I worked on something similar at a previous employer, should I bail.
A few years ago I built some automation for the HR department at my employer, I think what I built could be turned into a sass offering that could really help some people, I feel passionate about what I built, and know it really well.
Will I get screwed because I made something similar for an employer? I don't think they are using it anymore, and it was more a pet project, will they even know?
My old employers follow me on Linked in and view all my posts, so If I start talking about it there, that could be problematic. Will that even matter?
I have started building and I want to keep the momentum up, what are the sticky points, of working in the same domain as something you worked on at a previous employer.
I'm not a lawyer, but you're probably fine.
If you want to play it extremely safe, go back to that employer. Tell them you're looking for beta customers. And explain that they used to use something similar, with less features, in the past.

Thank you. I hope so, it's risky and I live in a smallish town so the word can travel. I think I will have other features and things so... I'm wary because I had the idea while working there. I'm going to keep building.
