Bookmark problem - I have this issue for a very long time, I come across great articles and posts, I bookmark them and never revisit them again. The list gets bigger every day and it’s overwhelming to look at my bookmarks after some time. Does anyone facing the same problem and do you guys have any current solutions for it?
If you have this problem and currently don’t have a solution, do you guys think it’s a good idea to create a product around it? Thanks
I'm pretty sure at least 5 products were launched here in the last 6 months around that problem or at least around bookmarking things...
I think that problem is kinda the same as a backlog for a dev team, it's just a place things go to die due to the fact there is more to do than can be done (resource lack problem), like you can make a list of great books to read that would take more than a lifetime to finish - it's just a want vs can issue. GTD has a system to work thru lists of decision, reference, and such which might alleviate some of your concerns
I have the problem, I collect links constantly for projects, work, side jobs, etc. Everything is fine until the llist gets so long it causes brain-lock. It's a serious problem BUT over the years lots of people have tried to crack it - it extends to using multiple different kinds of browsers as well. I have a bunch of subfolders I use so that helps to some degree as far as putting them in cans is concerned but That's only a bandaid. The biggest issue I have is that I cant annotate the link, I cant add tags, I cant visualize them, reorder them graphically - I have to load the whole webpage to see what they are, etc. Maybe having a really big thumbnail of the screen and give me two sentences as to why I saved it and a tag cloud etc. make it cross-browser.... I have the problem, I can grope at the solution but I would need a long time to nail it - it has to be intuitive, light, graphical, assignable to tasks on other platforms maybe. I save links because I will need them later but I can't manage why I saved them and when later actually arrives - mostly no notes, no why, no when.
Please beware, a lot of people saying they would like to revisit their bookmarks does not necessarily mean that they would be paying customers. Wishful thinking !== actual intent. I too wish I would revisit all the bookmarks I've accumulated and organized into folders over the years, but if I haven't there's a reason, and I would dig deep down to find the reason of each person that responds enthusiastically. For me, I've come to realize that it's stuff that I will probably just find again on my own when I need it, or if it's just interesting content there is so much of that getting thrown at us everyday that I just prefer catching new stuff rather than sifting through old stuff I've bookmarked.
Totally agree with you Barry, even I feel the same way when I want to visit my old bookmarks. Like every day I get new post or articles on all platforms I thought what’s the purpose of bookmarks. But after researching a little more I found that the current bookmarks solutions out there don’t solve one major issue, that is remembering the bookmarks. There are three types of bookmarks that people usually do, one for immediate consumption eg: ‘I am working on a project essay and found an article that would be useful to complete it, so I bookmarked it to be used within a week.’ Here the chance for me to forget the article I saved is very less, as it’s is been needed in a short period and crucial for completing my essay. And the second is for entertainment purposes like a funny article or post to read during free time, here there is no importance given as people get lot’s of these in their social platforms. And the third is for long term consumption eg: 'I come across a fantastic article or post regarding hidden tax saving for middle-class people that could save a lot of money when they buying a new house, here I don’t want the article immediately as I am planning to buy a house after a year or two, so I bookmarked them for later consumption’ Here’s the real problem, within a month I might forget what I saved and when I am buying the house after a year, I might not know about the hidden benefit of tax savings, because I forget them and chances of me getting the same topic of content elsewhere might be very less. Here the importance is given to why you saved in the first place. And people can remember them only by constant reminders of them periodically until their goal is met. It’s just my basic understanding, I might be wrong also, feel free to share your opinions. Thanks
Great analysis, that's what I was hoping to hear :) This is a novel approach, I like it. The question of "is it a big enough problem that people are willing to spend money on it" is yet to be answered though. I personally would not spend money on it, I just don't care enough.
Does not Pocket kinda solve this problem already?
I don’t think pocket has a reminder option.
A solution to this would be highly welcome. I've been struggling with coming back to my bookmarks, even after going dividing them into folders. A solution that checks if you've looked at your bookmarks after a set duration of time and sends you notifications on whether you'd like to keep or delete them would be nice.
Build a mvp and drop it on indiehackers see what the vibe is
Yes ✋. I save a lot of posts on LinkedIn and add a lot of videos to my "Watch Later" list on YouTube. Then I rarely go back to them.
I don't know what a viable solution would look like. Personally I think the issue is that I'm waiting for a good time to consume that content, but I get distracted with new content. Also, I save things for later because they require more thought/energy than I have at the moment.
This is an interesting problem, but it requires some careful analysis of human nature.
I saw a browser plugin today that helps you learn a new language by randomly changing words on a page you're reading to the foreign language. You can hover over the word to see the meaning if you don't remember. So, just brainstorming ... I wonder if you could have some smarts in a plugin that would detect something on a page you're looking at that seems connected with one of your bookmarks, and put in a little menu where you can be reminded of and perhaps go to the bookmark. Dunno. At least that would make the bookmarks seem more "present".
