If you are using the pomodoro technique, you need to use breaks wisely.

I've been using pomodoros for quite a long time, but recently realized that most of the benefits of using this technique come from taking regular breaks.

They not only help you to stay focused during longer periods of time, they also play a critically important role in consolidating your memories.

By looking at the brain waves of volunteers performing a cognitive demanding task, scientists from NIH found activity patterns that suggested their brains were solidifying memories during the rest periods. They conclude that “resting, early and often, may be just as critical to learning as practice”.

Use your breaks to restore your energy, here are some ideas:

  • Drink water
  • Do some light exercise
  • Stretch
  • Meditate
  • Close your eyes

Do not involve in any activity that sucks you in, such as browsing the internet, using your phone or watching TV.

If you are not already doing it, next time try to be mindful about what you do during the pauses.

I usually work very focused until I gain consciousness back, which may be any where from 15 min min on sparse days to 3 hours when I’m super motivated .

Anyone else with my working pattern saw benefits using pomodoro?

It's great that you can take advantage of the "flow" state, in general it's not a good idea to interrupt it once you're in there. But you may get some health benefits if you take some regular breaks or switch positions while working on a stationary job.

The 25-minute sessions is just an standard, I think this largely depends on the type of work you do. I suggest you to try with different combinations (eg- 50/10, 40/20) and see what works best for you.
But I still would take some regular breaks, or switch between sitting/standing if your work is a stationary one.
