"Around 3 AM, Dean (my husband and co-founder) and I change shifts. I head to the nursery and hop into bed. I pray the little guy doesn't wake until 6 AM even though it’s a given that he'll be awake by 4 or 5. It's not a very sexy life 90% of the time, but the guts of business and parenthood rarely are. When people talk about 'work-life balance' my head gets fuzzy. It's a daily struggle. I find life is easier when I acknowledge how I’m feeling but don't let my emotions rule my decision making. That mentality comes from my mum's side of the family. They are Holocaust survivors and old-school Europeans. One thing I've noticed is that they are brilliant at acknowledging their emotions and feeling their full force for a time, but then saying 'enough is enough' and pushing forward. The first few weeks we had our baby, I was anxious about everything — was he still breathing? Was he eating enough? Why is he coughing? What if he has a brain tumor and I'm completely unaware of it? My business was a lifesaver in those moments — when my imagination was running wild it was a godsend to be able to work. Sterling is only 10 months old now, but he's already watching every single thing we do. How we face each day shapes him as a human — our patience, our overreactions, our frustration, our kindness in the face of each other's frustration. You can't help but be acutely aware of how lacking you are, but it also makes you a better person. Even if everything were to fall apart with the business, how we pull through that as a family has the potential to teach him resilience."
What a lucky husband!
Thanks! I'm an incredibly lucky wife - I've never met a more patient and self-sacrificial person than Dean. Makes working and parenting with him an incredible experience.
This was amazing to read - and so true.
Your child dictates when you get to work and everything s/he sees you do teaches them about right/wrong. They end up teaching you too, about keeping your cool in front of them.
They're mini-startups we can't fail :)
I love this!
