"I don’t need to earn more. My monthly income isn’t crazy high, but it’s enough. So I feel like now, I could be doing more to help other people, like charity work. It’s the one thing that should always be on my todo list, but isn’t. When I give time or money to charity, it’s such a good feeling compared to almost anything else. I volunteered to give a talk to a bunch of kids that were between 5 and 10. Later a lot of them wrote on their blogs that it was their favorite part of the day. Yeah, kids have blogs now. It’s crazy. Anyway, it was a really good experience. I’ve got control over my time and I want to spend more of it helping others. I signed up for a half-marathon a few months ago to raise money for a British heart foundation. I happened to Google it, got caught up in the moment, and signed up. Now I’ve said I’m going to raise all this money so there’s no backing out. I’ve never run a half-marathon before, but I’ve been training. I’m ready. It feels good."
I love this. There seems to be this culture in the entreprenerial world that you should be striving to make as much money as possible, grow for the sake of growth, always more, more and more. Congrats on breaking out of the mold and defining yourself by something other than your startup metrics!
