When I got home, I'd study from 10 at night to 1 in the morning...

"My mom didn't believe me when I told her I'd gotten a job as a developer. She kept asking me, 'Why would they hire you? You don't know anything about tech.' My husband was the only person I'd told that I wasn't feeling fulfilled as a classical pianist. I didn't want to play music for money anymore. He's a software engineer, so one night he brought home a book about coding for me. And right away, it was fun. It was hard but I loved it. We put a whiteboard up and he gave me lessons at night on stuff like binary and low-level programming. I worked 12-hour days as a pianist and music teacher. So when I got home, I'd study from 10 at night to 1 in the morning. I'd test myself by replicating different apps in the App Store. Only eight months in, I landed my first job in tech. Last year, I was named one of the 'Top Ten Women Makers' by Maker Mag. I'm definitely a lot more satisfied in this life. I feel like I'm closer to who I really am. We always joke that the book he bought me was the best investment he's ever made."
