Hey Indie Hackers,
Trying to grow your twitter account? I've been coaching about 20 VC backed founders through some private slacks I'm in on how to grow their twitter account. The folks that have followed the guidance are seeing growth of ~20% week on week.
I figured this was something that indie hackers probably need more than funded founders π
Post your account here and I will send you 3 things to do this week that will grow your audience!
Edit:
Hi Tom!

Thanks! :)
Hey Simon,
Good luck!
Thanks a lot Tom!

Much appreciate your help!
Hey Andrew,
Congrats on the weight loss journey! 30kgs in a year is no mean feat.
I'm rooting for you - send me a DM on twitter and I'm happy to support more.
https://www.twitter.com/temidayoxyz
Hey Temidayo,
You've been tweeting consistently over the last couple of months - keep it up, it's been helping! You've got a great timeline as well, I think you're doing a lot of the right things to keep growing.
It seems like you focus primarily on tweeting out into the void and hoping for engagement (9/10 of your tweets is just a tweet to your timeline). Try changing the ratio - make 5/10 of your tweets an interaction with someone else.
This tweet is one of your best performers. That format is a great format to use - quote tweet someone with a bigger audience and adding your own insight.
The tone of your tweets is very instructional ("follow this advice"). Until you have a bigger following I'd try changing to a more conversational tone ("here's the advice I got, here's how I implemented it, and here's the result I got").
If you do any of these, please let me know in a week if they help at all!
Hi Tom,
Thank you for the audit and tips.
I'll ensure I implement them, and let you know if they help!

Hey Ercin,
Hope you're having a good time in Bali - sure looks like it!
You've got a lot of hashtags in all your tweets and profile. That's a bit out of fashion these days. People often think you're trying to game the system or sell something.
Your engagements all seem to focus on the NFT community. If that's the most important community for you then that makes sense. I'd say it's stopping you from growing outside that community though, so if you want to grow outside the NFT world then I'd add some more tweets about your other projects.
I said this to a couple of other folks too - a display pic that is more human will help.
Best of luck - let me know how it goes!
Would love feedback - https://twitter.com/salilsethi
Hey Salil,
What's your feedback on these suggestions?
Thank you for the offer!

Hey Ryan,
Great banner photo - what city is it? Got some pretty easy suggestions for you:
Are you actively trying to get more followers?
I haven't been focused on gathering more followers for a while, but have been thinking about getting back into it.
The photo is one taken of downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
Thanks for the feedback :) !
Hi Tom thank you so much for offering.
Here is my twitter account https://twitter.com/itsjustyouc
Hey @Bipbop
I just checked out Kurato and I'm surprised you're not using some of your instagram technology to help grow your twitter!
What do you think?
Thanks a lot @tomelliot this is super helpful.
Can you tell me more about what you have in mind, in terms of using my instagram technology for twitter?
I'll definitely reach out to @phillipstemann, I've been following him on youtube for a few weeks and loving app reviews.
Thank you for the kind words. You can hit me up on Twitter if you need anything. π
Thanks Tom! I'm fairly clueless and need all the help I can get.
I need to find ways to engage more with potential customers for Headlamp - @HeadlampTest
https://twitter.com/WhidbeyHacker
Am I wrong to think I should mostly be tweet as "me" and point people over to @HeadlampTest?
Hey Dorian,
Trying to grow two accounts at the same time! Courageous. I'll focus on the personal account for now:
Any of this helpful for you Dorian?
Very helpful, thanks Tom! Every one of your points is actionable and sounds like good advice. I'll fix the banner and start engaging more with the Twitter accounts of Software Test Team Managers - my potential customers.
#nomorehashtags :)
Thank you so much. Here's my link: https://twitter.com/ritendn
I'm a first-time founder, currently focusing on content creation and distribution for my startup on the internet. Would be great to hear from you.
Hey Riten,
Great account, consistent tweeter, cool product (fueler). Nice work!
I don't have too much to add.
Keep it up Riten!
Thank you so much man, you took out time to review my profile. Really appreciate your man.
I will surely work on the 2nd point you have mentioned.
Wow! Thanks! https://twitter.com/thevicmontano
Hey Victor,
I love the sketch you have as your display pic π₯³
You've picked up your tweet volume this month, so that's been helping you pick up more followers.
You're a member of the Notion Community. Try finding people in there that are producing good notion content and then quote-tweet or reply to them on their main timeline.
Create a list of great Notion folks (with accounts that are your size or up ~2k followers). Promote that list on your twitter ("lots of great guidance here, follow this list if you want to become a Notion pro!"). Then let those folks know that you put them on the list and that you appreciate their great content.
Change the wording of your profile. "I want to show you how to use meditation to achieve your goals!" is nice, but I don't know what I need to do to make that happen. What's the call to action?
If you're looking to keep growing your twitter, feel free to DM me on twitter, I'm doing a closed alpha for the tool and you look like the type of user that I'm targeting, so I'd love to give you access in exchange for feedback.

Hey Vika,
Here's some suggestions:
I'm currently trying to grow my personal account so maybe you'll get some inspiration from my tweets! https://twitter.com/iamtomelliot
Thanks a lot! I followed you, have good luck!
Hey Tom, @albertoresci
Thank you so much! (I just started)
Hey Alberto π
Looking good! You've got a call to action in your profile ('follow for more', the arrow in your banner), so that's a great start.
I think people will be confused about the fact that you're 15, but also claiming to "tweet awesome threads and resources to help your dev journey". You're probably a better dev than I am, but I can imagine people might think "why would I listen to this kid??". You could change your message to be more about learning and sharing.
A display pic that is more human would help. If you don't want to use a photo of yourself check out what @thevicmontano did for his display pic.
You only have 9 tweets, so I guess keep at it π
Feel free to DM me as you're going and I might have more tips for you!
Thanks for the tips. Yeah I might just remove that I'm 15, though they can tell from my profile pic as I still have a baby face. I'll try what @thevicmontano did, it looks very nice! I'll keep tweeting and tweaking my profile as I go through my journey. Thanks again Tom!
Hh, nice one Tom.
Here is my account:
Is about front end and design
Thank you so much!
Hey Mike,
Very impressed with what you're doing on all your design brands - unwrapped, svgdoodles, brutalist websites, the list goes on!
You're also consistently tweeting, so that's great.
Looking at your timeline, you do a great job sharing updates on your projects. To keep growing at your size you'll need to start mixing up your format away from "informal build in public" to more "professional" - higher fidelity, higher value tweets. Check out Matt Wensing as an example.
If you really want to put the pedal to the metal then find 4 of your twitter friends that have about the same number of followers as you do and are also trying to grow their account, and set up a 1 month challenge. Everyone puts in β¬25. Whoever grows the most (as a %) by the end of the month takes the whole pot.
Use analytics.twitter.com to find your best performing tweets each month for the last 6 months. Retweet them.
I'd be curious to hear how you go with this!
Are you using any tools currently to manage/grow your twitter?
Thank you for the kind words, Tom, they are very welcome.
I do share updates of my projects as you say, but since I unfollowed 5k users and left only 100 I have lost around +-200 followers, and it got stuck on 3185 Followers.
Sometimes is like tweeting to the void.
More professional, so branded tweets? I'm in, I like the idea, because I am actually I am on the process to brand unwrapped.design and put all there but in different links...
A bet? Interesting...
I am not using any tool because, I am bootstrapping my bootstrapping adventure...
Thank you so much for taking a look, really appreciate it :-)
Hi tom, please audit https://twitter.com/ri5hirajp and let me know what I should focus on. Thanks.
Hi Rishiraj,
Looks like your last tweet was in May, so that's an easy one: tweet. No one will see your account to hit the follow button if you don't tweet π
Try putting a call-to-action in your profile ("follow me for ...", "check out my blog at rishiraj.dev")
Find 3 people you follow that tweet about something you also about. Turn on notifications for their profile for the next week and then reply whenever they post something you can add value to.
Any of this useful for you Rishiraj?
Thank you the third tip is very helpful with something that I haven't tried before and gives me a lot to think about.
To be perfectly honest, I did tweet for 2-3 months as an experiment and it was clear that more I tweeted and more I engaged with people, the more followers I got. But it was so slow that I abandoned it and instead I should first define and build a brand first. So that I can pick a topic I love and tweet about it constantly.
I know your first advice works, thanks for pointing it out.
Hi tom, @deepankarbhade
Thanks π€.
Hi Deepankar,
Your twitter's looking nice! Also Chloromaps is great too.
Here's some tips:
Hope this helps! If you'd like to follow my personal account, I've just started trying to grow it too: https://twitter.com/iamtomelliot
Wow, my mind is blown that you not only checked the profile but also went through post replies, and checked the product out π€―.
definitely putting 2,3 into effect followed by 1 soon once I have a good picture.
Followed on Twitter (the least way to support back).
Thanks for checking it out.
@its_mastan
Hey Mastan,
Number one thing for you is easy: Be more active - you've tweeted 3 times in the last month!
There's nothing in your profile to tell me what I'm going to see if I follow you, an update to tell people what to expect from your account will help.
Change the pics - both you display pic and banner are stock images. Not very exciting for people seeing your profile!
If this has been helpful, I'm trying to grow my personal account too! https://twitter.com/iamtomelliot
Hi Tom,
Thank you in advance:
@phillipstemann
Hey Phillip,
Looks like you've started putting more time into twitter since June and it's been paying off. Your big jumps in followers has happened when you've been tweeting >10x per day
I'd like to hear if any of these tips help - I'll follow up in a week to see!
p.s. How's Planzer going?
Thank you, Tom, for the analysis. I'll try and implement it.
Planzer is moving forward. I have users, but no paying users yet. Hopefully, August is the month to change that. It's my main goal this month. π
That'd be a great theme for some tweets this month! A top tweet with the goal and then sub tweets with your attempts + progress.
That is very true, thank you. Duly noted π
Hi Tom,

Hey Alex,
Just checked out ERA.sh - looks like a super clean tool!
You've already got 2k followers (nice work!) so I think you already know what you need to do to keep growing! You had some great growth earlier in there year and now it's stagnated a bit. Here's what I picked out to help get out of the rut:
Any of these resonate with you?

Hey Ivor,
Looks like you've been in the game a while so I think you probably already have a good understanding of twitter culture. Do you have some new goal you're trying to reach? Or you're just curious to hear my suggestions?
Curious to hear how it goes!
Thank you, Tom.
I agree, I'm just lazy when it comes to social media, but that's a big mistake!
Hey Tom,
Just started an automated twitter account today for stonkmoon.com - @stonkmooncom.
Currently we are tweeting public companies update but plan to add stock performance and other KPI metrics along with more interactive content.
Would love to hear any tips and suggestion for growing the brand new account.
Thx so much!
would love to hear your thoughts

Hey Dan, I've gotta wrap up for the evening and get to bed. As promised, I just sent you a DM on twitter.
I'll come back to this thread tomorrow!
We are really failing on the twitter side of things.

Hypothetically, say I don't even have a Twitter handle yet but am considering Twitter as a platform for an indie hacking project. How would you start?
Hey Tom, @dyrectorio
Thanks in advance!

Hey Joy,
You've been tweeting pretty consistently the last month - nice one.
I did a quick review of your account, here's some tips:
Find some more people that talk about topics you like, and follow them. Having more people showing up in your feed will help you to find more people to chat with.
You tweet a lot of advice ("Live like a student", "How you can level up yourself by using Antifragility", "Get yourself used to the art of not finishing. Don't like the book you are reading? Ditch it"). From your profile I'm not convinced that you have the credibility to give me advice (although you definitely might!). I'd suggest either: increase the credibility of your profile by listing some of your achievements, or switch your content away from your opinions and instead reference others that you agree with. Here's an example where I did that.
When you engage with someone else's tweet, try either sharing an experience of yours that relates, some insight you have that's relevant, or asking for some more detail/depth from the OP.
Hope this helps Joy!
thank you
