I've created a personal portfolio website and a business website (alignmentapps.com) I also have my own android app (cryptocontactsapp.com).
What tips do you have for new indie developers like myself?
@csallen
My advice is to identify areas where you're not that great — areas that you might even be afraid of — and make a conscious effort to improve there. Try to work this into running your business. I think this is helpful for a few reasons:
Hi Glenn.
My advice is this. Creating a product is easy, and fun, and lots of us do it. Finding customers is hard. In fact, its very hard. Develop your interpersonal skills. Get good at talking to people.
A lot of developers would rather code than talk to clients. That’s a good way to make something that people don’t actually want.
If I had one piece of advice it’d be learn to sell well. Talking to prospects abs figuring out what they want is extremely important for success.
I hear this one all the time and I never get off my ass and sell. For me, it's one excuse or another to avoid being in that uncomfortable selling space. I think I just need to begin constantly reminding myself or set a schedule dedicated just for selling and communicating.
Two things. Use marketing automation software like Narrow.io to help alleviate the burden of marketing while you're building.
Secondly, learn how to prioritize. This sounds trivial, but developers have a habit (including me) of working on things that don't move the needle. You need to know what to work on to build momentum. That's critical.
