It works like a funnel for me. Search for lists online, read descriptions on Amazon, then a full book summary. If we get to that point I'll buy on Audible. And if its really good then I get the physical copy.
A useful heuristic I try to follow is waiting to investigate a recommendation till I hear it twice. If on podcast I hear someone recommend a book I'll passively log it away as recommendation #1. But if I hear that book recommended again, then I know its time to take a deeper look.
Thanks for going deep into it @TJR ! So you look at multiple reccomendation to understand if it's good book to read or not ?
Yes, I'm getting more picky as time goes on so waiting to have multiple recommendations helps filter out the mediocre books. I think we've all consumed many books that didn't need to be as long as they were or should have been a long blog instead.
I'm also moving in the direction of reading fewer books but reading a handful of books DEEPLY. reading it, rereading it, writing a summary of the book, looking up sources mentioned in the book, and engaging with people online about the book/topics. the people who applaud themselves for "reading" 2-3 books in a week don't make any sense to me. consuming that much information at that speed doesn't lead to retention or deep understanding that can actually be applied.
tldr- depth, not breadth
Oh wow ! I found another deep reader.
I agree about consuming a lot of information at massive pace. I'm currently studying this book influence, to try and understand what makes people tick. And I love how indepth it can go.
What book have you been studying ?
not a book a lot of business ppl read but good nevertheless- "Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself" by Joe Dispenza.
Biggest takeaway- if you want new reality, then you have to have new thoughts. stops my self-limiting thoughts in their tracks.
