I'm selling my AI-powered Instagram app

I'm selling my Instagram profile roasting app Roastagram.

It was fun to build and still gets users everyday without me working on it for the last few weeks.

It has a lot of potential but I don't have time to improve or grow it. I want to focus on my main business.

Traffic

It gets 1,400 pageviews per month. At its peak, it got that many in a day, so there's plenty of potential for growth.

Most of the traffic is from search and influencers.

Every time someone analyses their profile, their page gets indexed by Google. When it's a popular Instagram account, Roastagram shows up in the first 5 searches for their username (e.g. lemilenas, patriciatarka) on Google.

This is programmatic SEO on steroids.

The wider niche is horoscopes. The search traffic for horoscope-related keywords is humongous. Take a look on Google search console or Ahrefs.

The other major source of traffic has been features in popular newsletters:

  • Ben's bites newsletter

  • Matt Navara's newsletter

Each brought thousands of visitors. Lots more opportunities to get links and features like this. People are looking for cool AI apps.

I would double down on SEO and influencers for growth.

Monetisation

I made a few dollars when I launched it by charging with a freemium model.

Right now it's not making any money, but there's value in an already-built app in production with some SEO juice (thousands of pages and a few links) and many options for monetisation:

  • Directly charging for full analysis
  • Ads and sponsorships - social media scheduling apps like Later, Buffer, Pallyy, Hootsuite, etc. might be interested.
  • Affiliates
  • Merch - hook it up to a print-on-demand API like Printful and you can sell personailsed physical goods.

Tech stack

  • Ruby on Rails 7 + PostgreSQL

  • Hosted on AWS. But could easily run on any VPS or PaaS (Heroku, Render, Railway, Fly).

  • Apify for scraping Instagram profiles

  • OpenAI gpt-4o-mini for the analysis. You can easily switch to Anthropic Claude by changing one environment variable.

Costs

  • Apify - $25/month. This is the main cost. Scraping Instagram is very hard and this is the only reliable and relatively cheap option I found. You can drop this to zero by using the Instagram API directly. I did not have time to do that.

  • Hosting - could be as low as $5/month if you go with a cheap VPS. But shouldn't cost more than $10-$20/month unless you grow it like crazy at which point you can afford to spend more.

  • AI API costs - few cents / month for OpenAI gpt-4o-mini. gpt-4o and claude do give better results but cost more. You can switch to one of those when you can afford it.
