Most freelancers charge half of what they should.
The math most people miss: a $65K salary target isn't $31/hr. Once you factor in self-employment tax (15.3%), health
insurance, non-billable admin time (~30% of hours), PTO, and a profit buffer — the real rate is closer to $94/hr.
Nearly 3x the naive number.
I keep seeing the same pricing questions everywhere — Reddit, Twitter, freelancer Discords. People genuinely don't
know what to charge and end up making half of what they could.
I'm exploring whether to build a simple, free calculator for this:
- Input your target income, expenses, country (tax rates vary)
- Get your real minimum hourly rate
- See what happens when you account for what most people forget
Before I write a single line of code — is this something you'd actually use?
I put up a bare-bones validation page. Nothing built yet. If you'd want early access, drop your email here:

Honest feedback also welcome. If this is a dumb idea, tell me why.
