You can set up Google Analytics for your extension (under "Store listing" section of dev console) and know which channel drives more conversion/installs.
yeah, I've set this up. I think my problem is I've used the same analytics ID to pump metrics in the extension that I have for the Chrome store listing itself so I'm getting the two metrics aggregated together.
I also can't tell if the metrics in the extension are actually getting pumped or not, which is further confusing the issue. I really need to look into this. Likely what I'll do is remove them from the extension and see what happens to the metrics.

Mixed stats is not a big deal. You can filter GA reporting by hostname='chrome.google.com'

Your rankings may not be suffering - search volume for every keyword varies throughout different times of the year
The keywords you are ranking for may have low search volume at this time of the year, check Google trends or Ubersuggest and it will tell you if this is the case. If so then also find related keywords that are high when your others are low.
End of the day if you're getting installs then that's all that matters??
How are your content marketing/social media efforts going?
I only launched ~2-3 months ago, so I don't think it's seasonality.

"How are your content marketing/social media efforts going?" => from Google analytics it does appear more of my traffic is coming from social media that prior to creating the social media accounts, but obviously that's a lot more work than getting organic search hits.

Yeah, Ubersuggest and other SEO tools but I don't know how exactly it works for Chrome extensions sorry!
Looking at google trends for the terms "medium bot" there are spikes of huge searches and then trenches of no searches for a long period of time

It's not an overly popular keyword but you have reached rank 1 so you will get majority of traffic.
Also I post on medium and this looks like something that would be a lot of use for me, is it against medium rules to use this? - Could my account get banned or anything?
It is against their TOS, but I don't believe they have a way of detecting its use.
Making the software a Chrome extension means it's using your IP address and more importantly your browser fingerprint, which means it's technically impossible for them to differentiate between your real clicks and the extension's. I got the idea from a similar extension I use with Twitter that's been going strong since 2015 for the same reasons.
As it stands now, we've yet to have any users report their accounts being banned, but again, we only launched 3 months ago.
