Hi guys,
I have to say that I think I prefer the days when there were a smaller number of groups. I think it kept discussion well defined and well moderated.
Naturally, I'm not suggesting that groups should never be added. If 2020 is the year of the podcast and also the year of the newsletter, then those groups have a rightful place.
I won't name names in terms of groups that I think are less valuable, because it's a matter of opinion. But, objectively, many interesting-sounding groups have single-digit members and single-digit post counts, and that's no fun.
Perhaps it was a bit too far to let everyone spin up any group they wanted?
What should be done to tweak it?
I'm working on cleaning up ones that have been abandoned and then also helping group owners create and maintain better groups.
I view groups as micro-communities, they are slow and hard to get off the ground, but in time the should become super valuable niche resources for indie hackers.
I swear I'll get around to deleting these groups one of these days…
Thanks! Super glad to hear it. I’ve long believed that stronger moderation led to better communities, so I’m very glad you’re spending some cycles on this :)
Run it like a league (groups promoted/relegated between divisions each month).
Introduce an incubator (new groups need enough traction to become permanent).
