Hello hackers,
I'm facing a dilemma:
- I'm thinking about a side-project opportunity that would be about creating a lot of video content for people to use SaaS tools properly.
- I'm French and can speak very decent English (90% of my current work is done in English) despite an obvious French accent.
- The business model I have in mind relies mostly on affiliation.
My question is: Should I start making that in English or in French?
PROs to using English:
- Bigger audience, bigger volumes
- Mo' money
CONs
PROs to using French:
- Less competition
- I'd be more myself since it's my mother tongue
- Might be easier to negotiate bigger/better perks if only for the French audience: "I'll open the FR market for you". (That's just a supposition.)
CONs
- Lesser volumes
- French are tight with money 🧐
What are your thoughts on this? What am I missing?
Hi Jules,
I'm also French, but I live in the UK, and everything I do is in english.
It will heavily depend on your customers. Here the customer will be the advertising company which is paying you for affiliate links. If you're able to get good deals with a french advertiser, then I'd advise to stick to French.
Another thing to consider is your ability to deliver content in english. A slight accent is acceptable, but your accent is too strong, people will be reluctant to consume your content. The vocabulary and grammar needs to be top-notch. I run video podcasts, and I've seen it with people I interview.
I voted for "French", but if you have any example content that you can share, that would be nice, then I can give you more accurate feedback.
Very spot-on comment Benjamin. I'll follow your advice and stick to French for my content, it'll feel more authentic and that's what I'd like to give to my audience. Thansk a lot.
