When your user signups for your product, what do you do next?? Do you send them an email asking them to confirm their email? or Do you call an API from a third-party to find if this is a fake/temporary email, then stop this signup??
Stop doing both and give access to whatever the user signed up.
This definitely is reducing your conversions (ever wonder why users never came back after you asked them to click the confirm email in their inbox). This is coming from a user's perspective and unless you have made a data-driven decision to implement this in the first place, you should try removing confirm emails and listen to your data.
I signup to different services to try them only with fake/temporary email. The reason being, I try a product, I don't see it fit and I leave, only to receive "jump in for a demo" "here's your 50% off" "you left this behind" automation sequences that follow me for life even after unsubscribing. When I reply "I tried but not interested in this" it simply goes unnoticed -- here I'd like to appreciate businesses that read and reply back sweetly and remove me from their list, I just hate the autoresponders.
Coming back, in this case, tho I use fake emails, I later sign up with my work email if this is the service/product I need. Hence, I suggest turning off API to check if an email is real or not. You may leave it on if you offer something free per signup and you notice users abusing it, otherwise email checks are not a good idea.
Email confirmation adds friction, hence I suggest removing that. Your user signed up to use your product, not to go to their inbox only to see and read a paid newsletter they subbed to, you're forgotten once they open it. Do business on your website, not on people's inbox!
For email confirmation, however, I have come up with something creative for you. For example, instead of asking them to confirm emails right away ask for confirmation after they have used it for some time (in hours, at least give them time to explore your dashboard) or to unlock a certain feature, essentially ask for confirmation when you think they have found value and will stay for some time.
So do you wait to add them to your email list until after you send them the delayed confirmation email? And does this increase the confirmation rate?
It reduced the confirmation rate actually but increased the customers who stayed with us.
Because only the ones who wanted to continue with us decided to confirm and stayed with us. Those who didn't confirm, we reached out to them and got feedback to improve our product and few subscribed to us later.
Cool thanks for your response!
I like that idea of delayed confirmation. Requesting confirmation to unlock a certain feature also sounds great. I'll definitely try that on the little experiment I'm building.
Try gamifying the confirm email to unlock part on your little experiment ;) and do let know how it goes!
What are you building btw?
Just another boring note-taking app. With a few perks.
