Indie Hacker graveyard (ideas not to build)

Indiehacker Graveyard

I see a lot of people building the same types of products with little success. Inspired by this tweet I decided to make this list of ideas to avoid.

Of course there are outliers and everything can be done better, but if you are starting out on your Indiehacker journey, these are products I would avoid building.
Or at least think twice before building.
Not shaming anyone, just want to present common pitfalls and problems.

Skill exchange marketplaces

Problem - Too hard to quantify skills. Is SEO a good trade for dev time?
Money was invented for a reason. It makes trades transferable, and storable.

Todo list apps

Problem - Your competition is pen and paper and like a million other apps. https://todomvc.com/ shows you how to build a todo list an any language. Everyone likes different things in their todo list.

Blogging platforms

Problem - Wordpress powers half the internet. Any devs will want to roll their own (and will spend weeks on the blogging system and 2 days on the posts :)

College Textbook Exchange

Problem - Lots of competition from the University Book Store, to resellers. Amazon, Ebay, FB marketplace, why will someone use your platform?

What are your friends doing / where are they app

Problem - This is a huge problem during college or early in your professional life, and not an issue later on. They are probably in bed, taking care of their kids, or fixing their house. Texting, Snapchat, Instagram Messenger, are all easy substitutes.

Screenshot apps

Problem - Tons of competition. Including the Cmd-Shift-4 built into your Mac. There are already a bunch and the output is all very similar. A nice looking screenshot.

Twitter Thread Tools

Problem - Tons of competition. How is yours better? What can it do differently?

Business Dashboard for all your business numbers

Problem - Integration Nightmare. APIs change, are not fast enough, don't give you enough data, fail randomly. All these issues will be blamed on you. And once you have this dashboard, most business numbers don't matter. Unless you can say 'if this number changes we do X' you don't need it on a dashboard. Most businesses don't know what to do with the numbers they have. I spent 5 years working at a VC funded company building this and it was still very difficult.

What other ideas should be on the list?

Agree with all the points except the screenshot app. There is satisfying option in Firefox and Chrome. I would pay for a good option. In Firefox i could activate the proprietary dev option wich was really good but in Chrome right i havnt found a replacement.
Someone want to build it ? I can help him in all fields except devellopement and only ask a free installation for my pc haha.

Another one : Todo apps : i need a better one, there is still a lot of options missing in the avaiable tools nowadays. Personnaly using Google Tasks and Microsft Todo, they lack of ideas. I can give my opinion if you want to create one :)
