Indie Hackers could have been a subreddit

But... I like it better this way, as its own site. The community feels much more focused. There are additional features to the site custom-made for indie hackers that wouldn't have been possible on a subreddit. I feel more like I'm involved in some kind of slightly secretive club.

Now I'm interested in the idea that other communities might benefit from the same isolation/specialization. One of the main interesting points of Reddit (and similar sites) is that the many different communities that had forums spread across the internet could be brought together into one site. Sort of a forum aggregator. Reddit became the place to go to find the most lively community around anything. But, have we reached a point where separate forums are more interesting again?

Do you have other recent examples of growing communities breaking out into reddit-style forum sites with community-specific extra features? Is anybody else bored of Reddit?
