For some of you, this might be a controversial topic: Indie hackers need bitcoin and should study it intensively if they haven't yet.
Disclaimer: this is not financial advise and I don't suggest to purchase or invest in any specific money or stock. I only urge you to study.
Now you probably ask yourself, why should I pay attention to a random post on Indie Hackers? And you are right, far to often advice on the internet is terrible. For this reason I apply a trick. I have attached the most authoritative resources towards the end. Sources you may trust more due to their trust and credibility.
Bitcoin is the internet of money
I don’t have to convince you about the disruptive potential the internet had and still has. Now imagine an open, permissionless protocol to transfer value. Bitcoin and the Lightning Network are the internet’s native currency.
Some people may suggest that their favorite scoin would be a better internet currency. I’m here to recommend you to look at projects and companies like bolt.fun, geyser.fund, alby, Lightning Labs, Lightspark, RGB to get an idea of innovation in the space.
Bitcoin allows you to store value
It sounds boring but it’s incredibly important. As an indie hacker you have to hedge your risks. You may go all-in with your project but eventually you’d like to build up reserves. But what do you save your money in? Cash under the mattress? Stocks on Robhinhood? Gold in a Swiss vault? Bitcoin is the single most effective savings technology. If you had saved just $10 on a daily basis for the past 10 years you would sit on 32 BTC now, worth over $1M.
Bitcoin is bank independent
As builders we always need banking solutions which requires opening an account with stripe, mercury etc. Depending on the size, risk and industry you’re in, you might get declined. What if you could just accept Satoshis with a few clicks? Wether you add a paywall, tipjar, use microtransactions for engagement or invoice clients with bitcoin, you can skip all the bureaucratic procedures of the old system and get paid for the value you offer right away with peer-to-peer money, independent from banks.
Bitcoin grows faster than your startup
Yes, past performance is no indication or guarantee for future performance. But history often rhymes. If you’re in front of a strategic decision whether to invest in your new project or new line of business, take into account that bitcoin will probably grow faster than you can build your business. Use Bitcoin’s Internal Rate of Return to benchmark and compare it with the projected performance of your own projects.
To conclude
Indie Hackers should spend time understanding Bitcoin for their own benefit. If you believe in the internet you will also understand the value of bitcoin and the long-term thesis.
If you already own bitcoin, study cold-storage, multi-sig and look into the Lightning Network and other application layers. If you don't own bitcoin, set some time apart to start educating yourself.
