Indie Hackers or Product Hunt? My Opinion

Disclaimer: I’m pretty sure majority of the members here also hold accounts on Product Hunt. So may be some of what I say is relatable. But I truly mean no offence to anyone or either of the wonderful communities. It’s just my opinion. I would also like to acknowledge the fact that both, in their rights have their advantages and disadvantages or whatever you want to call it. Now that that’s clear... here’s what I feel:

Indie Hackers is a beautiful, helpful, educative community. Product Hunt: not as much.

I will be honest. I follow both on Twitter. If you do too, you’ll realise there’s a difference between both:

  • IH team generally posts about the current posts, shares milestones, links to their interviews or the daily growth bites etc. the PH team posts about products posted to their page. Sometimes from the daily list and sometimes old ones (I’ve seen stuff getting posted months and years old).
  • IH in this matter is NOT bias. They kind of post everything no matter who the author is. PH team definitely shows some bias in what they selectively post. It’s pretty evident to me.
  • Also, The social media team for PH is also about emoticons and memes. They definitely like Elon Musk. IH just seems more mature - it's not about a single person or type of products, it's about everyone.

Now, when it comes to the posts, there does seem a bit of bias there too. The PH team does seem to have ‘voting rights’ and their upvotes count A LOT in increasing a products ranking. You won’t find numbers being just enough. It also matters a lot on who posted it, which has led to the culture of getting influential ‘hunters’ to hunt the product for you (I’ve had to do it too when I launched Snap Search, or else you just lose). IH is more authentic, you don’t need to find someone to post about your product - just do it yourself.

I’ve also never seen this bias issue here (unless I missed out on something?).

In fact, I remember reading a post about tips to launch. Here are the weird ones:

  • embed a PH badge on your page to rank higher
  • use Emojis in your description to appeal more
  • use GIFS for product logo because the community (or the team?) like gifs more.

There’s probably a lot more. It could also be my observations are wrong. But I really do like the IH community that much more. It’s friendlier, shows more love, and really educative and informative.

I'd just like to repeat I don't hate PH or anything, it's got it's own pros. I appreciate it's team and everything. This is simply my opinion.

i'm on both and have > 8,000 subs on their SHIP product:

but, the community around that product is bad and we've been losing subs like a religion — i can't believe i'm still paying for it... ugh.

their core product, though, is much better... good for a launch, but, most folks make the "launch" a much bigger thing than it needs to be.

i wouldn't necessarily say its a bad thing, like u said it got it's own pros, PH was designed that way, and it's a normal vibe for startups that want to be recognized

I feel you, but you got to give it that each platform has a different target audience.

IH is mainly smaller businesses, founders and makers (specially while they are making it) , while pH was more like a bay area type of thing when Ryan founded it for ppl to share new things (that are completed), it was actually what he was doing manually on quibb.com by hunting products and sharing it with Vcs and other valley people

The main target audience at PH is the product manager, from all sizes of companies and vcs
