Indie Hackers who've outsourced marketing, would you do it again?

I'm curious how most Indie Hackers think about marketing.

I know most users here understand that talking to customers and marketing your product is important. But how many of you either, don't have the time, don't want to do it, or simply don't know what to do.

It seems to outsource while bootstrapping is tough, given you don't have much money to work with. Especially when starting out. But if it saves you time to build your product, it might be worth it.

Let me know your thought

I haven't outsourced marketing, but I've outsourced parts of my marketing. For eg, different people respond to the cold email sequences I setup, etc. I'm the exception though (been doing marketing for 10+ years). For most IHers I think they're not familiar enough for marketing to outsource parts of it and would be more willing to outsource the whole process entirely.

What do you think Indie makers struggle with the most re: marketing?

Nice great question and poll. I think indie hackers struggle with telling their stories and getting outside their "curse of knowledge."

Sometimes indie hackers forget how to effectively communicate their idea and/or effectively interpret feedback. When they know their product and tech so well, it can blind them to simple communication to people that don't understand it as well. Conversely, the curse of knowledge can lead you to make assumptions or ignore feedback because "you know better."

I've outsourced quite a bit of marketing to various people. One of the worst outcomes was I outsourced social media marketing to someone on Fiverr. They literally had bots like the posts so it looked like they were doing a good job.

What were some other things you've outsourced? Marketing strategy or growth?

Stuff like SEO, that went well and sometimes not so well. SEO keyword research was basically a waste of time each time I had it done.

Instead of outsourcing marketing, you can actually build a whole team to market your product, acquire users and support them through https://skilledup.life - free talent for tech startups (once subscribed).

We are another option for self funded tech founders. We use our own free talent (volunteers).
