I would guess folks you talked to want this because of price tags coming from the McKinsey and like. If it is true how would you manage this aspect since indie researcher do no not have access to the infrastructure that these large firms have? read through vgr's thread. I agree that private capital can come in and fund r&d.
As he points out, this work will primarily be market research or interesting curation of information(like twitter threads,podcasts,blog posts etc).

+if I understand your question and proposition , it was that the big four charge a lot for research reports(which they do) but they are not paid for just their research, they are paid because of their name, secondly Indie researchers do not need high infrastrucutre spend therefore the output might not cost more
+if this is a bigger goal like you and VGR say, then there is excellent scope to raise more money once we prove out the initial idea.
Yes, I have experience in both academic and market research. Market research and curation are where the brand of large firms matters the most in contrast to academic research where you can do an original work that others read (but it is not easy). My hunch is that indie research will be more expensive than the ones for the big firms unless you provide some back-office infrastructure for the research network. I generally agree that more competition would be good on the field.

I run a productized consulting service for design sprints, as a solo founder. I guess that's a little like indie research? Might work to have a niche marketplace for these, but I wonder how different would it look from existing players like Upwork?
