Hey everyone, I just wanted to share some insights from working on a language learning platform.
Languages are vast topics spanning many domains and all the ways you can shape your mouth and the sounds you can make, all the symbols you can write. It's quite amazing to think about making a structured curriculum.
Well, I have some insights. If you have a large domain of lots of seemingly disparate info, do a frequency analysis!
Imagine you're trying to teach someone how to play all the music of a band. You could do a song or two, or a chord or two. But if you take all their songs and lyrics, do a frequency analysis, you can teach them the most frequent chords, strumming patterns, and transitions first. That's exactly how we approach teaching Japanese at Japanese Complete.
Another insight is that you really want to keep in good contact with your customer base. You need to be in touch with their needs, and you need to solve a problem they have. Preferably, you're solving a problem you've also had, and now you can both work together at making the best solution to the problem. Customers are gold and you may have to skillfully ignore some requests in order to honor a grander vision, but it's still valuable to make every customer feel heard, and more importantly to feel connected to your platform.
