Interesting/Inspiring stories of your very first user?

Hey IndieHackers,

I would love stories where you got your customer prelaunch (e.g. not through ProductHunt) or not through a following of yours!
I am currently struggling to get my first customer and would love some inspiration.

    Hi Ramon,
So for us we had about 30 people piloting our product (an online course) before we launched. We gave all the pilot people access to our paid course for free.

Before we launched, we created our FB page and tried to drum up a bit of attention. We didn't have a huge following (maybe like 80 pages likes at the time of launch) and we didn't use PH or anything else (although maybe I would have had I known about it at the time).

We got our first sale about 2 days after launch, but that was a family friend, mostly just being nice and supporting us.

It took about a month before we made a sale to someone I had never met; that was pretty cool. We did it by partnering with clubs on campus (I was at university when we launched). The clubs would use their email lists to send out a promo for us and we gave them 10% commission for each sale. This was great since the clubs got money and we got exposure and a few sales (also some free sign ups as well).

So that was our experience with launching and finding our first customers. At this point we are still small (we launched in January 2020) and are still figuring out ways to get more customers.

Hope this helps and best of luck getting the first one, you got this!
