Internal Social Media

An idea that came to me just now.

As remote work / work from home is the default option now for many departments, not just engineering, it seems we're more reliant on various tools to keep us updated on what other people are doing.

Gmail / Calender to set up meetings, see other peoples availability, Slack / Teams to communicate depending on the channel, Jira to make tickets, Confluence for documentation, etc.

To me, this sounds like there's an emphasis / importance in keeping up to date on what your co-workers are doing, and what's going on in other departments.

The idea I have is an internal social media site. The site is hosted by companies them selves, and kept entirely internal.

I haven't thought that much about it, but I can see how it could be useful.

People within the company sign up, authentication maybe can be done via LDAP or other common sign on integrations that companies use.

People make profiles, follow other people depending on departments.

You can view news feeds depending on certain channels like Slack.
