The AMA session with Tom Hunt took place on 22nd June 2022 on our Slack community
The summary of the AMA session is below:
Q: As a Serial Entrepreneur what you can suggest to people who run their business, top advice from you?
A: Treat your business like 100% of future business will come from referrals
Q: What you can wish yourself 5-10 years ago?
A: 5 years ago I wanted to be a millionaire… am sort of/nearly there
Q: Are you seeing a podcast as a good lead acquisition channel?
A: Yep podcasts guest relationships for short term ROI, listeners for long term ROI
Q: So you are mainly focusing on referral as a main lead acquisition right? What’s about outbound?
A: First channel is word of mouth and referrals, don't do anything else as that shows you that your product is good… and only then start working on the next channel
Q: I'm the founder of onpodium.com - building websites for podcasters. I would like to ask how are acquiring customers in such a competitive niche - there are big players like Buzz Sprout, Podbean, Libsyn, you name it.. and also Anchor offering podcast hosting for free (yes I know there are nuances with it ). What works the best for you to acquire new customers - SEO, cold outreach, social media or anything else?
A: Right now it's SEO and our affiliate program, we just released a free forever version to help speed up growth through that's TBC on whether it will work.
Q: Do you have any SEO agency or do you do it in-house?
A: All in-house… but writers are freelance :)
Q: You're one of the professionals I look upto. Can you share some insights on how did you decide on your goals 3 years ago?
A: Sure… three years ago my goal was to build a $1m business… and at that point I probably had a $10k per year business… and all I have done since then is just work at making it a tiny bit better each day :)
Q: What's the most reliable growth metric for B2B SaaS companies?
A: I would say usage of your product. If usage is increasing this shows that you are actually producing value… if you are doing that then capturing the value should be relatively easy over time
Q: A bootstrapping founder should focus on Sales or Marketing?
A: Neither… should focus on making the product amazing… then sales… then marketing :)
Q: Is there any hack to sounding more professional when recording podcasts over zoom or google meet? Are there any tools you recommend which make such collaboration easy?
A: Record locally with Audacity, record in a small room with soft walls e.g. a closet and get a better mic :)
Q: What are the podcasts that you personally follow, are inspired, and recommend? Top-notch, high quality, and execution.
A: All In Podcast, My First Million, State of Demand Gen
Q: Are there any metrics to look at when you start the podcast to confirm that these are healthy numbers? Per se, a number of returned listeners, bounce rate, finished listening rate and etc.
A: We like to see Apple Podcasts Consumption increasing along with 10% month-on-month download growth
