The decisive battle for a product: Can it engage & retain users?
Retention is an easy measurement: do users continue to use my product?
Engagement is more contested with regards to what KPIs are actually reflective of engagement.
Both have a the same problem though. They only become visible in hindsight.
The solution to this problem: the User Engagement Score.
It’s a crazy effective way to gauge a product’s ability to generate user engagement.
• The score is ONE number (highest score so far: 92 - Candy Crush)
• What do scores mean? 1 = users likely run away, 100 = users won’t stop using the product
• How is the score calculated? The 15 most relevant mechanisms are each rated on a 3-step qualitative scale. Accumulated, they give us one overall score. ****
• How I know it works? We scored 120+ Apps and found the user engagement scores to be significantly correlated to engagement KPIs in Apptopia. (# of Reviews / Download, Daily Sessions, Session Duration, etc.)
So what?
The User Engagement Score takes the guesswork out of user engagement & retention.
It further draws a clear picture for potential improvements to guide efforts.
