Lots of founders I talk with are looking for investors that might be a good match for what they're up to (niche and stage).
Some try to find info on Crunchbase but eventually people get paywalled for more relevant matches.. with some services wanting $3,000 to $5,000 a month!
Some have paid over $30,000 with a mix of results. If it lands investment that could be fine, but it's a big risk.
The problem isn't that these services don't work - many do. The problem is pricing.
Why it costs so much:
Manual research is expensive. Finding 20-30 relevant investors for your specific business takes 10+ hours of skilled research. At consultant rates, that's $2K-5K before any outreach happens.
But for a bunch of the services that are more just profiled lists and AI matching... they're pricing high just because they can.
What if there was a better option?
The same kinds of profiles, but much much less in cost.
I've been building a database of 115K+ investors for the last few years. Angels, VS, PE, Lenders, Family Offices..
Instead of charging $20K for custom research, what if founders could:
Access the full database for a fraction of the cost
Use AI tools to filter for relevant matches
Get basic templates and frameworks
Do their own outreach with better data
Same outcome. Way less cost.
The tradeoff
You don't get white-glove service of individual curation. No one does the work for you. But you get:
Comprehensive investor data
Better filtering tools
Proven outreach frameworks
90% cost savings
For founders who'd rather spend $500 than $5,000, this makes sense.
What I'm testing:
A simple approach: give founders the tools and data to do investor matching themselves, at a price that doesn't require a board meeting to approve.
Because most founders are scrappy enough to do the work - they just need better data and guidance.
Thoughts? Would you rather pay $400 for good tools/data or $10K for done-for-you service?
