Invite Only vs Anyone Can Sign Up?

How did you launch your product? I am launching my SaaS next month and stuck between whether having it invite only or anyone can sign up. I can see how exclusivity can be a doubled edged sword but it may be a risk I should take. How did you launch your product?

I launched invite only for about a year. I liked it!

    • It helped generate a waitlist of ready and exciting users.
    • Allowed me to create a tight relationship with the early adopters. Early adopters are so important - and I treat them like family. You can't do this if you have a huge group.

After a year, I opened public beta and allowed anyone to join.

This is a great response as I too would treat them as family for supporting me at an early stage.

I have a couple questions if that's okay.

      • How did the early adopters hear about you? Did you invite them?
      • How much did your waitlist grow substantially MoM?
      • What is your product? (if you dont mind me asking)

Thank you so much for your reply!

      Kindly,

      Alex

Hey Alex! Sorry for my late reply.

        Happy to answer your questions!

How did the early adopters hear about you? Did you invite them?

        • The earliest adopters were my friends and then from there, it spread through word of mouth. Basically, anyone who was there to listen, I'd tell them what I was working on! This made up ~50 people.
        • After the first 50, I started participating in different Reddit communities. Not really to promote my app, but just to participate and connect with like minded individuals. Every now and then, there was an opportunity that someone was looking for an app like mine - and that was my chance. This made up the rest of my user base and we're pretty much still functioning the same way.
        • Other than that, I launched on BetaList and got a few early adopters this way.

How much did your waitlist grow substantially MoM?

        • I don't have specific numbers. But, it was pretty slow for the first 3 months. Maybe grew from 0 to 20. Then next 3 months, 20 - 60ish. Then, we ended up stopping the waitlist at 100 and just letting everyone know that it'll be open invite by the New Year.
        • For the waitlist, we made sure to keep everyone engaged. We sent out emails about behind the scenes updates, educational blogs, updates on our roadmap, etc.

What is your product? (if you dont mind me asking)

        • Sidekick is a productivity tool to eliminate internet distractions and complete focus work. You can set goals, block distracting websites, schedule pomodoro sessions, etc.

Just another big learning I thought might be helpful!

        • I wouldn't focus so much on the numbers, but the quality of feedback. Sidekick has a small group of SUPERFANS and honestly, they're a HUGE reason the product is improving and why it's all worthwhile. Imo, this is much more important than a big number of less-moderate passionate users.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I'd be happy to provide my experience!

Allison thank you so much for your reply. This has definitely set me on the right track and has made me super eager to launch! We are set to launch next month hopefully!

One very last question if you dont mind.

As far as content you sent out via email. Were these graphics? What were you using to make it compelling? Was it just text?

Sorry to bother I know you are busy but I appreciate all your help!!

Hey Alex. No apologies needed - it's no problem at all! I'm happy to to help :)

I made a content schedule of things I thought related to my product and related to what my user base was interested in (productivity). I tried to alternate content types as much as I could to keep it interesting.

            For example:
week 1: welcome email. Story about me and story of Sidekick
week 2: article about the importance of deep work
week 3: preview of the Sidekick roadmap
week 4: poll to ask them what features they wanted to see in Sidekick
week 5: video summary of one of our favorite books
week 6: article about internet algorithms
            ... so on

Hope that helps! Let me know if any other questions come up. Good luck on your launch!
