Ionic "X": Low Code for Full-Code iOS/Android/PWA Framework

Max Lynch, CEO of Ionic Framework posted his thoughts about No Code owing to the shutdown of App Maker by google: https://ionicframework.com/blog/the-no-code-tragedy/

And he's kinda right: I wouldn't want to depend on the "black box" and don't have access to the code. Loosing my work due a shutdown of service would be a nightmare. Luckily as Developer I don't have to depend on this but seeing more and more No Code Apps makes one apprehensive. 🤔

However. They also gave a sneak peak into something they call "Ionic X", which looks like an awesome App Builder delivering an app based on Ionic. And on top it gives you access to the code. Which is awesome! Because this "Low Code" possibility might scale. Imagine you start growing really good with your No Code App. At some point you'll need more customization to apply to advanced customer needs and more complex business logic.

This is usually the point where you'll need developer-capacities. And this is where the "pure" Ionic Framework is great a base: You could develope with the major Frontend Framework of your choice: Angular, React and they are also working on Vue.js. This make it easier to find a developer and also provide a (re-)usuable codebase for a good start. Which should save your precious time!

Besides thaaat ~ it comes with these other Key-Features:

  • Dynamic data binding
No need to write or host your own API end points. connect to any relational database

  • Push to App Stores
Publish directly to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store

  • Live App Updates
Without Store-Approval procedure a.k.a Ionic Appflow

  • App Integrations
250+ Easily access native device features and third-party apps

  • 100+ mobile-ready UI components

Now the drawback: It's not released yet. But it looks really promising! https://ionicframework.com/x

Don't hesitate to ask questions. I've released couple of Apps with Ionic and I would genuinely recommend Ionic as Hybrid Framework for (almost) any Application. :)

    This looks awesome!

I'm a developer who actually specialises in the Google platform but I (thankfully) didn't touch App Maker. It just never felt like a great product. I've instead focused on 'web apps' which are full code solutions, just all the server-side setup and running is handled by Google.

This looks like the ideal mix between visual designer and code architecture. I really like the idea behind platforms like Adalo and GlideApps but in playing around with them I quickly ran into dead-ends with functionality that makes them basically useless to create apps with any real interaction.

I really love the idea of building mobile apps but I don't want to take the time to learn the ins-and-outs of iOS/Android development, but also I need more flexibility than those platforms above give.

Ionic X looks like it could finally give a true "Low-Code" solution that gives people like myself the ability to quickly create fully functional apps. Wonder what kind of 'pricing' this will entail...

Hey folks, little Update! @Saimon just uploaded a video where he also talks about Max's post and App Maker, but also compares some No-Code tools like Webflow, shopify, AppSheet (recently aquired by google), Glide and setups some examples during the video.

And finally, at timestamp 10:26 he talks about Ionic X. 😉
