A friend asked me last week whether a IPTV service can really replace a proper TV package in Ireland in 2026. I had been quietly testing 5 of them for 17 months, so I had a real answer rather than a guess. Short version: yes — and for a fraction of what I was paying.

WHAT ACTUALLY MAKES A GOOD IPTV service
After 18 months and 9 providers, this is what I no longer compromise on.
It holds at peak times, not just on quiet afternoons.
The channels you genuinely watch, live and in HD — not twenty thousand dead entries.
Two or three simultaneous streams, so the household is not fighting over one.
A programme guide that matches reality. Check it against three channels; if the guide is wrong, the provider does not control the feed it is selling you.
Support that answers a real technical question within the hour.
THE WEEKEND I ACTUALLY TESTED THIS
I picked a packed weekend — URC on the Saturday, hurling and a Premier League game on the Sunday — and ran four services side by side on four devices, same room, same connection.
By half time the pattern was obvious. Two held a clean 60fps picture the whole way through. One dropped to a soft, smeared image every time a match went to the break and everyone flipped channels at once. The fourth simply stopped and needed restarting.
That weekend told me more than three months of reading comparison tables.
MY VERDICT AFTER 16 MONTHS
What I actually watched: roughly a dozen channels out of the thousands advertised. The rest never opened once.
What made the difference: stability at peak times, two streams without degradation, an accurate guide, and support that replied like a human.
What made no difference: the channel count, the 4K badge, and the advertised price.
What I would do again: pay monthly for two months before committing to anything longer.
After 4 months of testing, the IPTV service I actually pay for is Northpeaktv. A free trial is available now, no card needed. Channel list, pricing and setup guides at https://northpeaktv.com — roughly three minutes to get running on any device.
