Essentially, it is just a numbers game, and a question of whether you can win said game.

Sure. Lots of people click on ads. But only if the ad is relevant, and most products that are advertised are often simply not relevant to the individual, hence the entire ad industry.

if it's aimed at people over 50, below 15, mobile users or tech illiterates it can work. although adwords are dishonest so maybe try another site

if it's educational maybe you could try affiliation for MOOCs like coursera?

Adsense gives you Notoriously poor RPMs. If you have a decent amount of traffic move onto ezoic or monumetrics. Once you get higher levels of traffic you can qualify for higher tier providers like Adthrive and Mediavine. /r/juststart is a good resource for info on different ad providers.

And what is the website about? Depends on the traffic, ads don't give much. You also sell ad placements directly to potential customers via outreach. If you have enough traffic, it's a good source of income.

I've tried it in the past just to learn how ads works, and just to see how much I could make. Eventually I dropped ads and started selling digital products, and removed the ads because they didn't create a great user experience, and would lead people away from the blog.
