Is Capterra helpful?

Tried it with my company, Reftab. It can be expensive. Didn't do it for long enough to have a completely valid answer here, but I felt like, if you didn't have enough reviews on your profile, the fact that you paid to get to the top didn't matter because a user will click your add (which costs you money) and then likely be looking at a few competitors at the same time. So 1) it's good to get exposure for sure but, 2) if you can't compete in review count with your high end competitors you may loose to them. Which means 3) Capterra must not only be about paying to be at the top but also MUST be used in conjunction with actively getting new reviews from customers. This is because usually, positive reviews are the #1 way to convert prospects into paying customers when your customers are comparing around.

Long story short, my reasoning leads me to bleieve, get a lot of reviews first to where organically your at least on first page, then Pay capterra to bump you to the top. And on top of that, make sure you have the features that your competitors offer. It almost feels like capterra is worth paying for if your product is mature enough to compete with competitors who have hundred to thousands of reviews. Otherwise, it's like why would a customer go with you when Capterra is showing them, right off the bat, the highest reviewed products at the top already? (Even when your product is better - high review count is just so valuable)

  Yes, what you are saying makes sense. They have a program where they will give people $10 gift cards up to $200 total to write reviews. If you coordinate with them the offer can be made to your email list. It's certainly helped get some reviews for my company, encaptiv.
  
  I have not paid for that top spot though and was debating if its worth it.
