Is changing to a subscription model a good idea?

A couple of months ago I launched Serverless SaaS, a SaaS starter kit. Although I'm happy with how sales have been so far, I see sales stagnating a bit and I'm investigating pricing strategies.

Since I'm constantly pushing updates and improvements, a subscription model crossed my mind. Initially, I thought that it wouldn't work, because I personally also rather pay once for digital products. But if it could also make sense. I could reduce the initial price someone has to pay and allow customers to cancel their subscription when they are no longer working on the product.

If you are building a SaaS product, you probably expect to one day make money from it. If you achieve that goal, that means paying a small yearly subscription for a product that helped you get there might not be a problem. And if your product isn't working out, you can always cancel.

I decided to change the pricing from a $299 one time payment to a $129/year subscription. That's just $0.35 a day for building a SaaS much faster. This makes the initial price a lot cheaper, so hopefully, more people are willing to buy it. If enough customers continue to use the boilerplate for their SaaS product, that means recurring revenue for me.

To make this pricing model work, I thought I should look for ways to improve the value over time. Instead of just a SaaS boilerplate, I created a dashboard that is filled with resources that could be helpful for SaaS founders. This growing list contains links to helpful articles, recommended books/podcasts, places to post your startup, a list of potential investors, and more.

As long as you are subscribed, you will have access to new updates, the "resources" dashboard, and are you allowed to use the starter kit for commercial projects. I'm also looking into ways (like creating a private discord) to make this more like a community for people who are building SaaS products.

Do you think making this change is a good idea or not? I figured the best way to know is to try it out, so I already updated the Landing page with the new pricing.

    I really like Serverless SaaS - looks like a really good time saver.

    I'd personally experiment with monthly / yearly billing. e.g. $14/m versus $129 yearly, and see what the uptake is. A lot of SaaS founders looking to save time may also not want to invest $129 upfront, so monthly is an easier sell.
