I posted this question on dev.to, but would like to also ask the IH community.
Data shows that over 60% of webs users use mobile. For any software, building it for mobile or web would be better.
There is little that desktop can provide that mobile apps/websites cannot provide better.
What is your take on this guys? Do you think desktop app dev is dying?
Apparently one of the impacts of the Covid crisis is a big shift from mobile to desktop usage. How much that sticks will probably depend on how much the related changes stick, but when I hear about eg. Twitter's announcement that the shift to remote work is permanent (so less commuting) for them, it seems more like this shift away from mobile could be permanent too.
Desktop app generally means PC apps outside browser. eg. Windows/Mac/Linux native apps.
Heavy processing needs these are still essential, such as photoshop, video editing, won't get that performance yet in a browser.
Document editing is now equally good is browser, more convenient in cloud since access anywhere.
Local file explorers/viewers/editors are main desktop apps I use these days and quite a heavy user, 95% is in browser.
85% PC, 10% mobile (I like multiple big screens), though know many these days are 100% mobile.
Would say desktop apps are slowly but surely phasing out. If a future version of chrome+android click download and files go to your unlimited free cloud storage, with access to all kinds of 3rd party view/edit apps, with performance to handle heavy processing....desktops will be dead and browsers will replace OS.
