Is it a good idea to make a video in English when you are bad at it?

For what it's worth, I am an American living in France and I have learned something about this. Every French person I have met says their English is not good, and most of them are wrong. I don't know if it's something from school, or what, but everyone in France seems to be so hard on themselves about how they speak English.

All that to say this - your English is probably better than you think. Nothing is wrong with accents, as long as you speak clearly and slowing if needed! I just checked out your video, and I don't think it's a problem. Some of my co-workers present at CES in Las Vegas every year to large crowds, and your English is on par with them.

It helps to write out your script in advance, and practice it a few times, making sure to focus on any words that might give you trouble. And having clear audio quality goes a long way at making the video easier to understand.

Of course, if you still aren't comfortable the other suggestions here are great as well. But maybe doing videos in English will challenge you to improve your English (if that's a goal of yours).

I've seen the video, and it's not bad!

My suggestion is this: find a way to have more eyeballs on your video and see, based on your likes vs dislikes ratio. If too many dislikes, then you'll need to hire someone.

My take on it -- your voice is not that bad. It could use a bit of improvement, but that will come in time. And the fact that you also show everything with captions, I would say that helps a lot.

LATER EDIT: I did look again at your video -- one thing that is not top notch is that for short periods of time, the captions disappear and reappear. I would suggest you would leave the region for captions on at all times.

It depends -- are you targeting Americans or Brits or South Africans or Australians? Most Americans find a French accent charming and intelligent -- so it actually adds value. Just rehearse it and make sure you are using proper grammar/congegation.

Not sure how the rest of the world feels, but that is the American sentiment.

Honestly, my English is much worse than yours but I have decided that there is no point in being afraid. So, I think the question isn't whether is it a good idea or not. The question is whether to start making videos now or delaying the inevitable. I think you are very brave! Good for you!

Go For It! Only thing, as someone mentioned, get a mic so your voice can be heard a bit more clearly and make it a little bit louder other than that, it's pretty good.

On another note, I recognize the answer the public format of showing the keywords, are you somehow embedding the results from ATP on your site? Or how did you do that?

@pvhk - my opinion as someone who makes a lot of YT videos: don't shy away from being truly YOU! We live in a global borderless world. Everyone has an accent! Personally I enjoy brands and companies that aren't afraid to put themselves in front of a camera and show the REAL humans behind the tech. It adds personality.

Fiverr videos are OK but I'm personally sick of seeing animated videos with machine generated voices. Your early users are your early users because they believe in YOU almost more than the product. Be YOU!

Also, YT videos and being in front of a camera get's easier with time and practice. You'll never get better and GROW if you hide behind Fiverr videos!

Pay 35 for a mic on Amazon.. and slow down while speaking. Everyone in America loves hearing accents so I wouldn’t worry about that!

Define bad first. :)

Most of us non-native English speakers will have at least a slight accent (I'm Hungarian, for example). I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. YouTube has many great tutorials created by folks from a variety of cultures and I can follow most of them perfectly.

What you might want to do is to have a call with a few native English speakers and ask them whether they can understand what you say instantly. Or even make a short video and ask for opinions.

If they don't understand what you say, you'd want to outsource this to voice over artists.

Have you considered outsourcing it, maybe to a voice over artist? It's usually a very good idea and gets amazing results as well.

I have the same issue. The best way using fiverr. It is a cheap and quality voice-over on your video. I use it for my PocketTube for every video. You can see it on my Youtube channel.

Definitely not a good idea. Use either a software solution or professional translators. Yes, it is a "necessary evil" in terms of additional expenditure, but you will be rewarded at the end of the day.
