Is it a good idea to pay for support to structure a business from start to finish?

Hello, good morning.

I’ve been thinking about an idea for a while and I’d like to hear opinions from people with real experience.

Let’s imagine a typical business that is still somewhat informal or in the process of getting organized. It could be a small cafe, a small restaurant, a chocolate shop, a workshop, or some kind of local service.

The idea would be this. Instead of taking courses or receiving mentorship, you ask someone to directly help build the business from the ground up. They help define the concept, organize how the business should run day to day, set up basic processes, support the formation of a minimal team, and leave everything running and documented. All within a clear timeframe, for example 90 days.

How much would it make sense to pay for something like this?

The 90-day "done with you" model you're describing has real value - but only if you're confident you'll actually implement what gets built.

    A few things to consider:

    When it works:

    • You have the capacity to absorb the changes (not in the middle of a crisis)
    • The consultant has specific experience in your type of business (a cafe consultant is different from a workshop consultant)
    • There's clear accountability for outcomes, not just deliverables

    When it doesn't:

    • If you don't have someone on your team who can maintain the systems after day 90
    • If the "structure" being built doesn't fit your actual constraints (budget, team skills, local market)
    • If you're paying for frameworks instead of judgment calls specific to your situation

The "how much" question depends heavily on local market rates, but a good filter: would this investment pay for itself within 6-12 months through increased efficiency or revenue? If you can't see a clear path to ROI, the timing might not be right.

What type of business are you thinking about?
