Is it necessary to start with a niche?

I am currently building an automated newsletter for people interested in stocks. I know that the Indiehackers 'rulebook' suggests that i should start with a niche, however i didn't niche down. I feel like that it makes it harder to attract new users. Has anyone experience with launching/marketing a product or newsletter without a specific niche? Do you think i should niche down first?
