Is it possible to create a niche that users don't know they need yet?
Hi, I was just wondering if there are any super forward-looking ideas that were original in the sense that keywords and other market research tools were not able to detect market need at the time?
Does anyone have experience with this? Examples of success? failure? Anything that can be shared would be appreciated!
What I can tell you for sure, is that these kinds of ideas are more difficult to develop. I do not say it to discourage, but so that, if you have one, you know what you are facing. We must remember that they are also the most fun to carry out 😉
thanks! Sometimes I feel like as an indie dev you have to follow the tried and trusted success routes before venturing into something crazy like "creating a market". That's a goal of mine one day to build something that no one saw coming and was successful :)
Dropbox is an excellent example of this. A quick short video explaining the product was posted on Hacker News by the founder and it almost instantly became a need and everything snow balled from there.
You can probably find a ton of readings on the history online.
In most cases, these forward looking ideas are born out of personal problems and needs where you go like, “I wish... there was a better way to...”

One problem is how to build awareness for your product if they are not searching for a solution.
I can only imagine the amount of effort needed to market and educate the audience that is being targeted. Such a gargantuan effort it sounds like!
