Is it worth it to buy a premium domain name?

Hi fellow indie-hackers!

I've recently found a domain name i really like. The .com version is $999 whereas the .co version is only $10.

Is it worth paying extra for the .com?

I know I can always get it later but I'm not sure if the .com will stay the same price...

In my opinion, I think it depends on the type of your website. If the only difference is .co and .com and the latter will cost you another $1000 I would recommend to think twice.

Whether or not a premium domain name is worth the cost comes down to how much it will benefit your site. If you want to make money and attract as much traffic as possible, the right name can be worth the investment. However, for most sites, it's easy to find a regular domain name that works just as well.

Alright, thanks! I guess i'll just go with the .co then!

When you're just starting out, it shouldn't make much of a difference, esp when the difference is just between .co and .com.

Once you've validated the idea, and have initial traction, why not? If you belive in the business and are seeing continuous growth, a good domain is a great investment. Just, not at the very beginning though.

    All the best!

I think that, at a certain point, people tend to overvalue the domain name. A potential customer will not usually see a domain name in isolation. If you have a solid landing page, good marketing outreach, great product(s), and at least some level of online presence then you can get away with the dumbest name ever.

I wrote this recently and still believe it. The $989 would most likely be better spent on development and marketing.

If you're just starting out, it's not worth it. A prospect isn't going to use your ".co" domain extension against you if you're providing a strong value proposition. The $990 delta can be put to better use in marketing/product development/talent/etc.

Probably not if you're just starting out. I'd go with the $10 version until you've proven the product, then consider having both later.

Hey man! I'm looking for feedback on Make A Card, a tool to quickly generate virtual event invitations: https://www.makeacard.info/

Hey! Cool project, I think it's a good start.

On the landing page, it's a bit bare. I know you're going after a more minimal aesthetic but it could use something more than the white to catch the eye. Having the two buttons (Get Started and Welcome) that go to the same place is a bit confusing. Maybe remove the "Welcome" card and instead expand the details on the offering below the hero.

On the card maker, I get why you started with a blank canvas, but it makes landing on the experience less exciting. I would recommend starting with the text shown there already. Saw a couple bugs when I was editing the card: all of the text shifts off-centered once you click "edit content" and continues that way after saving. It also seems to lose what color I was on if I go back before changing the contents. (I'm using Chrome on desktop).

I made this project previously that has a similar preview function for the posters - hopefully it helps give you some inspiration :) https://www.externaldialogue.com/

Thanks for the help! Appreciate the detailed response! You did a great job on that website so I definitely have a lot to learn and will continue to improve this project!
