Is it worth making a better ChatGPT UI/UX?

Hey guys,

I love chat gpt but I am annoyed at the UI/UX.

There is no threading, searching, highlighting, organizing conversations into folders, etc.

I thought of building but this seems like a low hanging fruit, I wonder why no one has done it yet (or if you guys found something like this let me know).

Thoughts? Is it too risky cuz open ai can release these features at any moment?

In the tech field, most people use dashboards and are familiar with the interface of ChatGPT. That's why I think this UI/UX is commonly loved by people.

I remember the day when I showed my friend the interface of Indie Hackers. He was surprised to see how I use this interface, and it looked very odd to him as a non-technical person. However, I really love this site.

It also depends on personal choice.

In fact, there are already many similar products, but the improvement in perception is not obvious. So I developed a browser plugin that allows you to call ChatGPT on any website without the need to copy and paste. I hope it can be helpful to you: https://checkget.com

Not worth it :( There are quite a few sites like that. A quick search found: https://turbogpt.ai/ https://bettergpt.chat/ (neither are mine) and I'm sure I've seen at least two others.

i made a plugin for my own use for this because chatgpt ui takes long time to retrieve past session. If there was something available i would have used it so it seems to me that demand is there.

A better UI/UX can potentially improve the overall user experience of ChatGPT, making it more intuitive and user-friendly. This can lead to increased engagement and usage of the platform. Additionally, a better UI/UX can help differentiate ChatGPT from similar language models, potentially leading to a competitive advantage. In upcoming versions, it will be improved. While it is helping a lot in this website UI UX designing by giving suggestions to me (https://techmiget.com/).

Did you just pasted the post into chat gpt and asked it to generate a comment XD?

Firstly, I make an answer sheet after that align my sentences with the help of ChatGPT

    Hey Michael,

IMHE from nearly 20 years of building, marketing & selling:

For your own personal use? Yeah sure why not.

For commercial purposes? No. There is no evidence that this is a problem people are willing to pay money to solve. If you can get 50 strangers (v.important) to prepay you $50 to build such a solution then I'll change my answer to maybe.

    Best

Initially I also shared this sediment, but after a month of use -- I am v happy with the distraction-free UX. I am using the OSX standard notepad (TextEDIT - plain text) alongside, for capturing key snippets.

The advancement we get with GPT4, way, outweighs the lack of highlighting, organizing in folders etc.. Fm, the release of the plugins facility by OpenAI, is akin to Firefox addons, Chrome addons.. they want developers to build on for UX.

Chatgpt Plugins - great - as they extend functionality.

I have found after a month, that most of my chats, I do not want to keep longer than 4 days. I grab snippets that are key. That is it.

Chatgpt supports plugins. When a plugin exists that:

    • allows me to simply print the ENTIRE chat to PDF - I will grab it.
    • allows me to save the snippet into a library or something similar- I will grab it.
    • allows me to grab the highlighted instructional text line and an AI model creates a 'how-to-video'

I am paying for the plus subscription and very pleased OpenAI are focused on the model, before any of the other UX. They are building in public and UX is much more than I expected for a BIP. I would not leave the chatgpt plus world for anything at this stage. I dont even use google search any more. I direct hit the URL that chatgpt gives me. I am not interested in bing, or even opera (that has chatgpt baked into the sidebar).

The relief chatgpt plus has afforded me, is like nothing I have experienced before. The distraction-free. The noise-free environment. Finally the internet is like how it was originally intended.

What is still missing, is ability to discover other AI tools that can do exactly what I am looking for. There are a plethora already out there but discoverability is terrible. These are my preferred aggregated platforms but both are lacking in discoverability

I can't wait until chatgpt data is updated to now.. so can ask "what AI model or app can I feed it a line of instruction and the model creates a 'how-to' video". Chatgpt plus is superb at telling me "how to build the app" but as a newbie, I how-to video would be the cherry on top.

Yea I agree, GPT plugins will be a game change (I'm on Plus but have yet to get access to mine in NZ).

Even still, could I send you some thoughts to get feedback? We are planning to build the chrome extension as you mentioned so that you don't have to completely switch but introduce some nice quality of life stuff

Sure, post your thoughts here on IH. Always happy to test. I can be a bit brutal though , (the kiwi in me) as I am like a 0 or 500% person. In/out no sitting on fence as you get splinters on your backside. :)

I'm on Plus but have yet to get access to mine in NZ

        • I did not understand the last bit. Located in NZ. My understanding is location has nothing to do with access for chatgpt. Anyone can change their IP.
        • I am on chatgpt plus (+ in NZ)

planning to build the chrome extension as you mentioned

    I have the same thoughts.

I played it out a little in my head. I think even if there isn't a really good product that does this, and even if Open AI doesn't release nice updates, the growth limit is really big because of GPT plugins. You'd have to make your own, and a better UX is not enough to switch people over.
