Is it wrong to optimise for happiness?

I've launched and failed a startup. I know the dangers of "focusing too much on product". As someone who LOVES the product part of startups, I'm very aware that the reality is, that's often the least important part for success.

Now, starting my IndieHacking journey again I'm trying my HARDEST to NOT DO what I want to do, which is to tweak on product. For example, I'm an engineer, but as much as possible I'm trying to focus on no-code tools.

HOWEVER, whenever I start going down the no-code path... I'm just not excited. Yeah the business could work, yeah I could create value... but the doing doesn't bring me joy.

Now, IN NO WAY am I advocating for re-inventing the wheel, or building a product in search of a problem. I DO want to create REAL VALUE.

BUT, in my heart of hearts, I love to build.

Does this negate being an IndieHacker? 🤔 How to negotiate this situation?

Perhaps you stand to be inspired by the benefits nocode brings, give it a chance to seduce you! Minimal maintenance, could be handed off to someone else (employee or buyer), unlocks your time to focus on People.

That being said, perhaps no-code tools isn't the way to go in your case. You clearly enjoy coding, so don't drop that part out - it's a bit like downgrading from homebaked bread to Wonder'bread'! I would limit how much time/effort I pour into tweaking, and balance it with time spent listening/talking to users.
