I don't think it was "necessary" back in the day or now, but it is a very useful tool that I see no reason not to use.
I’ve also heard that before. But recently I watched this short on YouTube and it made me realize that it became just one more platform to use.

Listing your product on different directories, not just product hunt, is always a good idea. Like @RichardGao said, there is no reason not use it or any other directory/Product listing site for that matter.
