Is the daily stand up useful?
If you are participating, why? If you aren't participating, why?
Given the imminent end of spring, I thought it wise to determine if this form of accountability is useful. And whether yes or no, if anyone has recommendations for optimization.

I find it's useful to share my daily updates on IH with a relevant hashtag. Like if I just shared my daily posts with no hashtag or under other ones it might make the site feel full of irrelevant content to some people, but for those who enjoying interacting with other IHers or hearing about how they're getting on on any given day I think it's a nice way to segment.

Yes, because it makes me feel like I'm a part of a movement, as opposed to a loner hacking stuff together in the corner of my apartment. Plus, I like thinking through other IH product business models and provide feedback wherever I can - it gives me ideas of my own.
Should we make a HarlemBot that would initiate the daily stand up thread in case TheRealHarlem gets tired of the duty? ;-)
(Laughing!) I'm not likely to tire as my ass needs the accountability. But it never hurts to have a contingency plan!

It is encouraging when someone comments on an update! Do you think that happens often enough? Any recommendations to encourage more participation?
Honestly, most people would never comment on some ones else update or progress unless and until they find it inspiring or useful for them.
If you ask me, I will step into comment on someone's update based on what they have achieved in that update, should also be mentioned very clearly. The current thread based reply in the forum does not help that.
For example, Consider I am developing a product. I have couple of milestones in the plan. But in my update I represent my milestone and achievement which may or may not reach other users. They might not even find it how important or how long it took for me to reach it. So if I have to appreciate or remark one's comment, it has to give me a clear picture on where they stand by linking to milestone timeline. It should also inspire me to plan it in such a way.
Correct me if I am wrong, IH has product section, but does it help me to help plan my milestones or put up an idea before it actually became a product. Everyone knows, an idea can never be stolen. So I honestly find it no harm in laying out my plan or milestone or achievements of my idea or product and linking it with my daily update.
I participate because it's a community of people I'm learning about and have begun to think of rather fondly. I'm rooting for you guys and it's something I think about every night and every morning.. what did I do, what did I commit to. It's been important to keep me on track, and get back on track when I went OFF track.
In terms of accountability, I feel it when I don't post :) That has taken on a life of its own! As a guy working alone in a cabin, that's important to me :)
To add some more color, I jumped on the site to post my standup for the day :) It was a super productive day/night and I was excited to get that out of my head. It's so encouraging @Harlem to know you're here with the post every morning, leading us in our daily ritual :) It's also something we could do in a Slack group!
I've been wondering if we should move our stand ups to Slack. We're now a pretty solid group and we know who shows up consistently. The pro is that we wouldn't clutter IH with our daily grind. The con is that we wouldn't attract new blood...

I've seen a lot of Slack groups spin off of IH and then wither away. I don't think the daily standup posts are clutter, btw, I think they're a great example of what IH is for!
I for one find it useful, though I have on occasion spent a bit too much time reading other people's updates and failing to complete my own goals in a weird contrarian revolt against my own impulse for public accountability. I do enjoy the daily bit though, and the occasional support even when the involved group size has grown and shrunk.
To be clear, i think the preparation for the post is the useful part, not the actual posting of the update, so I have to think even if replies aren't posted, more people gain value than give comment. The only real pain point is the requirement to log in here to do it, but even that is sometimes enough to prevent interactions.
I've actually considered doing something with the concept as a sort of journaling product that I could slam together during a midsummer break. Think 750words meets 5 Minute Journal meets Scrum. Maybe wrap a short form podcast around it and slam together a simple little app. That's all sort of wrapped around my renewed drive to just be useful on the internet.
Re :gaining value.. there is always a sizable silent contingent who reads and doesn't interact. I am reminded of that once or twice a year on other social media sites!
Completely agree re prep. The most helpful element for me is thinking about "what's most important to accomplish today" first thing in the morning before I head to my day gig. When I come home, I'm often exhausted and haven't the wherewithal to concoct tasks, never mind do 'em. That's why it's nice for me to have a ready made set of tasks to come home to.
And if you'd ever like to collaborate on a Slack app for accountability, (smiling) I might have an idea or two!
I think there are some pretty robust stand up related add-ons already in the marketplace. Haven't tried them, but it might be worth trying those before taking time away from current projects to build one....just a thought. I'm definitely game for a daily standup slack channel. I think I'm in one that's pretty quiet lately, could be worth just jumping in there and reinvigorating the joint. I'll dig up a link or something today if you want. Maybe @Davey wants in too?

Unfortunately nothing but a seed of an idea atm.
I bought the domain on a whim a few months ago and have been thinking about setting up a site for it. Just considering platform and such because I don't want to actually build the site, just maybe produce content and build some community.

Maybe it’s good the way it is ;) One thing I just realized is that maybe, based on the titles, people could think you’re posting your own personal standup post every day and look over it! I’d give a suggestion but you’re a better copywriter than I am.
