Is the quality of feedback different between free and paid customers?

I was reading this post about low cost or free products. It got me thinking...

Can you count on the feedback you receive from free users to translate into gains with paid users? Or is feedback from paid users much more valuable?

Free users give a ton of feedback on how to get more free users lol.

    I prefer paid customers feedback.

...yep, if you are counting on product development being shaped by users, frees will shape it their way...

I like to look at it more of whether or not the person giving the feedback is a power user. I.e they use it very frequently and rely on it for their workflows. If they are also paying customers then their feedback is gold. Usually paying customers are power users.

General feedback is great and should not be dismissed but I’d be cautious taking feedback from someone who glances at the product vs from someone who is actually using it. This assumes you’ve already got your product to a point where you have active users vs no conversion at all.

Power users can provide great insight and suggestions regardless of whether or not they pay or stick within the free tier of the product offering. It’s more likely these suggestions are translated to gains.
