Is this the best news in AI this week?

Zuck is picking enemies fast. He’s up against Musk on one hand, with Threads, his Twitter rival that sadly, isn’t doing so well.

But there’s some joy today for them with their public release of LLama2. Their own, home-grown large language model that rivals GPT4 in quality and results.

So why am I excited about this? Aren’t there several LLM models already out there?

Well, Meta made theirs public. i.e. anyone can take the model, host it themselves and use it. No need to pay for any API, any charges. It’s just you and your hosting costs.

Now, hosting a LLM isn’t cheap but it’s cheaper than API if you’ve got clients. It’s going to open the doors of cheap AI implementations by a lot of businesses (SAAS product creators).

I think this is a major move in the business of AI.

So far the only people who made their LLMs public were the Open Source people and though they had some really good models they weren’t well-funded like Meta, so they weren’t able to always get the training resources that OpenAI has.

Well, that changed. Now OpenAI has to compete with a rival that’s ready to give away the goods for free.

Smart move Meta! You made yourself super relevant in the AI race. People won’t be talking about Bard or GPT without taking your name now.

Capitalism can be super good for consumers if done right! Kill the syndication and Cartelisation (like in the medical industry) and the customer will always be king!

What can you do with this? Well, I am judging not much, but I assure you it’s going to cause a change in your AI journey.

Expect new solutions to come up that use LLama2 and other free large language models to give you unique products that cost lesser (no more API charges!).

Overall, it is a good day today for AI.
