So I'm developing a new mobile app, development is underway and it shouldn't be too long before I unleash it to a set of alpha testers.
I've set up a landing page, linked to Mailchimp so there is means to collect email addresses of interested parties. My hope is if and once there is real interest, then those first sign-ups will get the app for free for life as they will also be the first beta testers.
I've also setup a facebook page.
Now my thought was to start early making frequent posts to the facebook page, letting the world know what I'm working on, and which features are being added as they are knocked off the to-do list, maybe some early screen shots. Whatever I can think of really that gives me some means to make frequent updates to the FB page.
My concern however is whether this is too much information that makes it very easy for existing competitors to see what I'm doing and incorporate those changes into their products. Maybe it's paranoia, and not sharing will cause more harm than sharing.
I'd love to hear what others have done/think about this.
Thanks!
Personally I wouldn't worry too much about competitors borrowing ideas.
When you are starting out at 0 MRR, not many competitors will pay attention. When you're big and successful, then they will start to check out your product and pipeline, and go "maybe we should do something similar"
If your stuff is so good it is worth copying you still have an upside: you can keep producing awesomeness while your competitors chase your tail, step through the failures and dead ends you've already visited etc.
And, at the same time, if the way you share your progress is exciting, you will grow an audience, some of the audience will grow into your "superfans". You will get some word of mouth marketing from people sharing your blog posts, twitter updates, live streams etc.

Thanks for your comment, which reinforces my suspicions I am being over cautious, to my detriment.
I guess because of all of my working life, I've been writing very closed software for protective businesses and corporations who would typically loath the thought of sharing any ideas and those being picked up by a competitor.
This, therefore, is the first project I own, and where I want to take risk and really push it out there, warts an' all, to build exposure before it's release. I want potential users to see there's a human behind it, who really cares what they think, someone they can speak to, and not some faceless corporation.
No-one is copying people that don't make money, to put it bluntly.
I think most people are good to share until they are making six figures
Thanks Pete. Good to be reassured.
