Is Twitter the best way to get initial users for your SaaS?

I recently started using Twitter actively and have noticed many SaaS creators getting good initial traction and users from the SaaS circle there. Retweets from big accounts actually seem to work, at least it worked for sociomata.com [Twitter scheduling and automation] waitlist.

Is it worth to be a part of Twitter SaaS community and invest time regularly given the return or should I focus on some other channel as well?

According to my Zero to Users research, no. For your SaaS, however, it might be the best way (since your target audience is Twitter users after all).

I've seen more founders succeeding with using Twitter search in a smart way vs. the "build an audience" approach. For example, if you search for phrases like "to post more frequently", you'll see a lot of people who are trying to be more active on social media. Maybe this is one potential segment for you?

Don't limit yourself to Twitter though. You also have some interesting FB groups that are Twitter related. If you can create an angle where Sociomata can be used to "get more followers", etc, that's an approach that could potentially work.

    Hope this helped.

Very valuable advice. I would love to explore Facebook groups as a channel.

Just wanted to say: You're helping a lot of bootstrappers here to get their first users.

Hey Dinakar, really glad you're finding my posts to be useful. Thank you!

    Yes x100

There are some lesser-known/underrated ways to leverage Twitter for SaaS marketing and customer acquisition beyond the standard tweeting and commenting.

I even wrote a blog post on this before: 4 Powerful Ways to Grow and Market Your SaaS Business Using Twitter (Examples Given).

Yes, its also a good option

    1. Follow people who match your ideal customer persona. For us, that was content strategists and content marketers. Both audiences are naturally social, so we got a lot of email subscribers just from people checking our profile out of curiosity. You can automate this using FollowerWonk, I did it manually.

Your Twitter profile has to be at least decent for any of this to work. Good profile picture and header, value proposition and call to action with a link in the bio, etc. I went ahead and bought some fake followers from Fiverr for social proof. I'm not sure if this was necessary, but it can't hurt.

    1. Use Buffer (company) to share interesting content related to your industry. Use the link shortening feature to see how many clicks the content you share gets. I tweet 2-3 times a day.

A lot of industries have hashtags with a community around them. #eventprofs for event planning, #contentstrategy for content strategists etc. It shouldn't be too hard to find. Add a hashtag to the content you share to amplify it. Only do it if it's actually relevant to the content.

    1. Use the hashtags to retweet, favorite, and generally engage with other people's content and tweets. Read some blog posts people are sharing, give your opinion on the topic and thank them for sharing. If you get a reply, you might want to reply with a tweet asking for their thoughts on your product. "I'd love your thoughts on what we're building". I've used this multiple times and it's worked every single time. I usually get valuable feedback + a pre-launch subscriber.

There are literally hundreds of channels, Twitter is one of them. Your product seems like a good fit for Twitter though.

Go to where your customers are.

Where do the people you validated your idea with hang out?

And re: validation, I wrote this quick read.

Yes - agree with this 100%. You can’t say ‘no’ universally because some target user groups might use Twitter heavily.

Twitter is defintly a good option for SaaS products. Espacially for something like Sociomata. If you're looking to launch other product which are not Twitter-centric, you could also run a few tests on other platform (e.g. Reddit, FB Groups, Google Search SEO, Youtube, etc). Identify the top 1-2 channels that work best for you and focus on those. Don't spread yourself too thin.

    Best of luck!

I agree that this works for us because Sociomata is part of Twitter API programme and all possible users of our product are Twitter users (at least for now). Thank you for your insight, I plan to explore Reddit apart from Indiehackers and Twitter.

Why not? When starting out with no audience, all eyeballs count.

    1. 1

Yes, I was thinking the same. I just followed you on Twitter.

I use twitter for 15 min a day and see some returns, but am mostly there to learn from others
