I have been practicing identifying painkillers and vitamins of various businesses to come up with the most effective message for my own businesses.

Came across this medium post that did a superb job elaborating the two camps:

Vitamins provide long term benefits. They’re an investment that will help you make progress on larger goals. Unfortunately, the delay of gratification with a vitamin can cause friction for customers seeking to make a purchase.

Painkillers solve an immediate need. They’re something you can apply to make progress on a goal right away. The period between payment made and value received is short. As a result, it’s much easier for a customer to pull the purchase trigger.

I wanted to hear from Indie Hackers to see if you can explain your business from two distinctive angles - vitamins and painkillers.

In painkiller messaging, address the problem users were experiencing and address a solution through painkiller messaging. In contrast, in vitamin, show what the users could accomplish or become if they used the product/business.

I want to turn the table and ask IndieHackers if you have thought of your businesses from these two separate angles. And if so, what would the exact wordings be? How can you make your message stronger and more convincing? Comment below, and let's brainstorm together.

It's a great concept. I've read about it from different angles before and have been thinking about it a lot recently while creating my app.

Last month I had a toothache. The pain was excruciating until I went and bought some painkillers and popped a couple of the pills. It made me think, "I want to solve toothache problems. Does my app solve a toothache kind of problem?"

As anyone who's had a toothache knows, all of a sudden nothing else matters except getting rid of the pain! And if someone offers a solution, it doesn't take much time convincing them to buy. My app is a bit of both - painkiller and vitamin. I'll definitely be using this angle on my sales page to highlight and drive home the problem(s) and explain why my solution can give immediate benefits as well as long-term ones.
