Is your product a 'must-have' or just a 'nice-to-have'?

You can still make billions of dollars out of "nice-to-have" stuff.

Movies, songs, porn, games, toys, luxury goods, etc. etc. generate a TON of GDP worldwide.

This is the nature of modern-day consumerism.

All you need to care about is people are willing to pay money for it.

I built an MVP before for an HR software solution that was definitely a "nice to have". Turns out HR is basically the most underfunded part of any org. So if you don't build something that saves them more money than it costs - you are in trouble.

As a Product Manager this is something that you learn to think about in alot of settings, it's quite important depending on what kind of market you are focusing towards. Companies cares firstly of 1. Increased Revenue 2. Cut cost 3. Make things more efficient.

I honestly don't think there are many must-have products out there. I think my app is a nice-to-have if you are already doing meal planning or intend to. You can plan your meal with pen and paper, so the app is a nice convenience, and it saves you some time.

We are working on ERA, and I think it is a must-have for every developer out there.

ERA is a note-taking and documentation tool with focus on privacy, available on MacOS, Linux and Windows. We try to keep the user experience as simple as possible, no documentation is needed to learn the tool and you don't need to set up hundreds of add-ons to make it useable.

Before we created ERA, I stored all my notes and documentation in different tools, they were lost in so many spots and I could not find them. On the other hand, there was just no tool that was satisfying my needs.

Now I am well organised and ERA fit's well into developers' everyday workflow.

Considering my product allows users to run popular AI models on the cloud and the boom of AI apps popping up, I'm fairly certain it's a must have.

Generally speaking, an endless 3D runner game is a must to have product every game needs.

At first, it is nice to have ShareTXT. But after using it for the first, second and third time, you begin to wonder why it is providing so much value for free.

I’m working on what feels like a ‘nice to have’ but in reality I think it’s a ‘must have’. It’s not a profit making service but an investment within employee’s.

Must-have for me(so i can make a living :-) ) and nice-to-have for my customers as i think my product can be replaced with excel sheet if budget is tight.

It's not binary in my opinion. I'm a cofounder of Scraping Fish (https://scrapingfish.com) - a web scraping API and we are both must-have and nice-to-have product depending on customer.
There are businesses who rely on us since they built their product around the data they obtain using our service. We also have users who use our service to make their job/workflow easier but they could devote some time to develop their own solution similar to what we offer.

The crazy thing is, the world moves so fast, a must-have today may not be a must-have tomorrow, especially in the tech world. A non-tech product that springs to mind though in this scenario is the plastic bag. In the UK they were banned several years back (can't even remember how long ago now). Plastic bag manufacturers went out of business - never having predicted that being 'green' would become so important that their must-have product became a 'no-buy' product. Nothing is certain. Build something you love and hope for the best and don't worry about must-haves and nice-to-haves.

Even in a non-funding-related capacity, it makes sense to build something that is a must-have rather than a nice-to-have. But then I guess, if you validate your idea enough then does it matter?
